Fingerprint Friday - { sisters }

My girls in a parking lot, two short years ago...
these two are devoted to one another,
their sisterly love is so sweet.

One of the things I prayed for when I was pregnant with Claire was that she and Nicole would get along in a special way, and I see that prayer answered every day.

There is a song by Steven Curtis Chapman that says:
I can see the fingerprints of God
When I look at you
I can see the fingerprints of God
And I know its true
You're a masterpiece
That all creation quietly applauds
And you're covered with the fingerprints of God

So look around you and see where YOU can see God's fingerprints. Is it in nature? Kids? Animals? Where do you see them? Here's how to join in:

owl be seeing ya

Thanks to the greenbelt along the east side of our new neighborhood, as well as a huge scrubby field behind our house, we have already encountered more nature in this house in 3 weeks than we did in the entire 9 years at our last house.

This morning, I was awakened by this sound (not the first time), and I could tell it was coming from our roof because it was so loud.

My mind immediately went to "do you think I could make it out there in time to get a picture?", forget that it is pitch-black outside and close to 32°! Maybe sometime I'll try, but that just wasn't going to happen this morning.

I recognized the call immediately from when the girls and I studied the Great Horned Owl last year for school as part of a unit involving the beautiful story book, Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. Check your library, it's a wonderful read! The girls really appreciated the book more after I found audio clips online so they could hear the actual owl calls.

the stink police

This is their second visit.

Last week, they used a liquid treatment in "the hole" and an enzyme fog treatment in the closet, bathroom & the girls' rooms, which took away 95% of the stench (and bonus - the fog treatment made the rooms smell like baby powder.) But the malodourous hole is harder to tame, and today's second treatment is necessary to see if further action is needed.

Fingerprint Friday - { rainbow sunrise }

Wednesday morning, I was out early in the yard, trying to finish up a gardening project. A random cloud decided to gently shower me with some rain, followed by a beautiful rainbow shining on the left side of my yard...

Then I turned to my right, and saw this...

it's the simple things

A few days ago, my mother-in-law asked me an interesting question - what is my favorite spot our new home. I expect she thought it would be the jetted tub or the bay window nook... and at the time she asked, I was still so overwhelmed with all that needed to be unpacked and organized (not to mention the skunk smell) that I could not think of one single place in all the house I yet enjoyed.

I have now thought of my answer, however, and am posting it here for all to see.

Yes, here is my favorite spot.

This is no ordinary kitchen cabinet.

Oh, no.

This is a roll-out double bin -
the front bin for trash, and the other for recycling.

So now I no longer have a trash can sitting on the kitchen floor. Nor do I have piles of recycling on the counter, awaiting their final transportation to the blue bin in the garage. The best part? It is located between my stovetop and sink, so when I'm cooking or doing dishes, this bin is right there - I roll it open, and let the onion skins or egg shells or cantaloupe rinds just fall in.

Sweet bliss.

a moment for manners

"Good manners reflect something from inside - an innate sense of consideration for others and respect for self." -- Emily Post

I picked this book up at the library, looking for something that would not obsess my brain with a plot line while I was moving - (that is, something I could read a bit of and then be able to put down to get back to unpacking!) I just finished it up, and must say it was an interesting refresher in good manners. I think more people need to read it, although I'm guessing the people who really ought to read it will probably never pick it up.

I was confronted with a situation where this book's advice came in handy just two days ago. A mother at the soccer game passed out invitations to her daughter's birthday party to other moms... but only a few. Now really, I don't expect my daughter to be invited to every party and event held by others, especially if she's not close to this particular girl. I don't have hurt feelings, and my daughter doesn't even know about this situation, I just was surprised at the lack of consideration to the other mothers present while the invitations were handed out (especially when they started gushing about the party theme and gift ideas.)

Peggy Post says in Dilemma #39:
Don't distribute invitations at day care or preschool (and I'll add: any other group/class activity) unless everyone gets one. Prevent hurt feelings by mailing invitations or making phone calls to those who are invited instead.

Peggy also says that when you are confronted with bad manners, the only well-mannered thing to do is to handle it with grace and not make the ill-mannered party feel badly. I am not posting this occurrence here as some sort of rant, but simply as a reminder to please be considerate of others... thank you.

wish I could have been there...

Two weeks ago, while I was moving stuff into Our New Place, painting the 6th room I had painted in 4 days, and catching a whiff of something skunky,

my cousin, Christa, was married!

I wanted so very, very much to be there - why, oh why, did our closing date end up coordinating perfectly to that week, to keep me from being there?

But if I couldn't be there, totally amazing photos are the next best thing.

Congratulations, Christa & Tommy!

The whole event looks amazing, even the rain... you can see the whole session on the photographer's blog, here.

And here's a beautiful shot of my grandmother & aunt...

Tommy & Christa had a fantastic photographer, Kimberly Jarman, whose style is right up my alley. Next time I'm in Arizona, I hope I can call her for a shoot with my family.

Thank you to Kimberly for allowing me to use her photos here.

serene

I made a new etsy treasury this afternoon...

Click here to go see it for the next 3 days, full size and clickable.

It's amazing how focusing on calm, cool colors can ease your nerves.

I needed that today. We have a flat tire on the van from a screw that undoubtedly came from the construction zone we now live in. My dishwasher is simultaneously leaking under the sink and not draining.

But I should focus on the good things - I got three more boxes unpacked, started some new sewing projects, and I'm about to start dinner (early!) so maybe I'll have time to watch a movie I rented (for myself) tonight! Oh, and the builder sent out a fumigating team today... they used enzyme fumigators (non-toxic), and we are all hoping this solves the
residual skunky smell.

10/19 update: this treasury made it to the front page of etsy! I am so excited! Several of the items sold out, so I have rearranged it to give the alternates a chance to be seen...

saturday's festivites

I'm running behind, what with all the unpacking and all. But I cannot miss sharing our city's big festival from this last Saturday! The Old West is alive & well in our small town, and to add to that feel, the reinactment troupe my husband belongs to does several shows at the festival every year.

This is a big event, y'all!

the four of us

Chad plays Sam Bass, an actual local Old West outlaw, with his gang at a confrontation with the law

enter the Texas Rangers

"You can kill the man, but you can't kill the badge"

Nicole's friend, along with Claire & Nicole, with a few cowboy players

Nicole & her friend - the thrill of the slide!

Claire's thrilling, too!

he's a good-lookin' fella...

Name That Odor

So two Saturdays ago, we started smelling a weird smell coming from the girls' new bathroom as we were moving stuff in. Then it got worse, and by Monday it was awful.

We called the builder, and he sent a plumbing guy over. The plumbing guy inspected all drains, and assured us it was not sewer gas we were smelling, despite the assertions of the builder to that effect. The plumber suggested it could be a dead animal in the wall, to which my husband, his brother, the builder, and even a new neighbor all firmly said, "No way that is a dead animal smell." Please note their unanimous certainty in this matter.

So then Chad drilled several 2" holes in the wall behind the bathtub/inside the linen closet to try to see inside. The builder ended up helping him cut around the holes to take out a 2 ft. rectangular portion of the wall. All we got from this was a big pile of shredded wall board and insulation on the floor of the linen closet - still no source of the stench. And as of Thursday, 6 days into this problem, the smell wasn't showing any signs of fading at all, unlike the reassurance of most that "dead smell usually go away in a few days."

Here's a little visual aid for you... the fan is blowing into the hole in the wall...

I should state at this point that we set up the fan seen in the above picture in the bathroom window (thank goodness this bathroom has a window!!) and have been sucking the stinky air out. Using the fan & keeping the door closed has kept the smell confined pretty much to the bathroom. So I am happy to report this has not affected the other rooms of the house.

OK, so back to last Thursday... the builder sent out two guys who basically deal with fixing up various warranty issues for the neighborhood. They cleaned up all the debris from the closet & in the wall with a shop vac. It turns out the debris had been hiding the source all along. A SKUNK. Yes, seriously. This is why the smell wasn't going away - this was no ordinary rat or mouse in the wall. The poor thing had burrowed into the insulation under the bathtub, taken a nap, and was sheetrocked in - rather sad to think about, and I'd probably feel more sympathy if this wasn't my brand new house!

Since computers don't have a way to share scents (you're thinking, thank goodness!), let me share with you that it did not smell like when a skunk sprays. It really was hard to identify - that's why the builder initially said "sewer gas" and someone else suggested "fertilizer or bug spray?" And that's why 4 big "I-know-what-a-dead-animal-smells-like" men said "NO WAY is it a dead animal".

The workers who found it ran gagging to my front door with greenish looks on their faces, I thought they were going to lose their breakfast on my front porch. Then, because they still had to remove "it" from the wall, they obtained painter gas-masks from the painters finishing a house across the street.

Since Thursday, we've all been trying to get rid of the rest of the smell, which has proved to be a difficult task. The clean-up guys used PineSol & Fabulouso, then a concoction of Dawn dishwashing liquid, baking powder and hydrogen peroxide. Chad & I have also tried Odor-cide, and today I bought an enzyme scent remover from the pet store.

As of right now, it still smells heavily of a weird combo of cleaners & gym socks. And the door is still closed, and the fan is still running.

Here's the big hole in my linen closet as it is now.

Fingerprint Friday { Boxes }

How do I see God's fingerprints in a pile of unpacked boxes & used newspapers? In the way He orchestrated the details of this transition to go so smoothly for us, as a testament to His faithfulness.

I realize not everything in life is easy or smooth (not even everything about this move has been easy for us), but in the times that it is, I believe it is because God paved the way as a reminder that He loves me and is always there for me. I can then look back on those times and be reminded of these truths, and that encourages me inside during the times when things are hard.

Yes.

Yes, I am alive.

Yes, we have moved.

Yes, we finally have internet today, and yes I got your email - I had 65 messages in my inbox.

Yes, things here are crazy and hectic and exhausting.

And yes, it is late and my eyeballs feel sandy, so more sharing will have to wait until later.
