Self Portrait Challenge - Air

Wind, like all elements in this month's challenge, can be our friend or foe.

I choose to see the friendly side, because here in the hot south, a breeze is a cherished commodity in the midst of an oppressive summer.

Today we took the girls to the local planetarium to see their first starry show. It is hot & humid today, but I rolled down the window anyway to enjoy the breeze & to take this photo.

What Makes This Special?

I was just reading a newsletter from one of my favorite online fabric shops, and she mentioned that it's the people that make quilting special, and this is why we love designer fabric collections. Why else would we be so excited about dye printing on simple cotton cloth? Because we like the idea that behind that cloth is a face and an artistic mind.

I'd like to extend that sentiment to the boutique designers and buyers that I work with.

I enjoy meeting and working with my buyers. It is fun for me to make clothing for one special little girl, knowing that she and her mommy (at least) will appreciate and enjoy the design they receive from me. This is why I have a Customer Gallery on my eBay Me page, because I love to see the girls whose beauty shines through my designs.

I also hope that buyers feel the same way - that they like buying something that has a face and an artistic mind behind what they are receiving, as opposed to a mass-manufactured garment that has been through countless hands of which you will never know the name of even one.

This really extends to all indie artisan businesses:

It is the people that make it special!

Self Portrait Challenge - Floating

My favorite thing to do in the pool:

float on my back for as long as I possibly can.
This means until one of my kids splashes me :)

I love

the feeling of the water holding me up like a liquid mattress

the sun shining on me

the way the sounds of the world are muffled for just a little while - replaced by the calm swish of the water by my ears

And yes, this is the kids' pool in my backyard, but the feeling's still the same as it is at the "real" pool :)

Self Portrait Challenge - Fire

Self Portrait Challenge for July - "Elements: Water - Air - Earth - Fire"

I had a small crop of tomatoes from my garden, and since I'm the only one in this house who likes them in salad, I decided to make some salsa! Above, you see me fire-roasting a jalapeno pepper, after which I also fire-roasted the tomatoes. I peeled & substituted them for the canned tomatoes & the boiled peppers in the recipe.

This salsa recipe from my friend Laura has just the right kick & flavor.
Thank you, Laura :)
Try some yourself!

Laura's Salsa

1-28 oz. can whole tomatoes
1-4oz. can diced green chilies
1 bunch cilantro
1 bunch green onions
2 cloves garlic
3 jalapanoes

Cut up whole tomatoes in bowl, and beforehand drain the juice into a blender. Add diced green chilies and green onions to the the tomatoes. Boil the jalapanoes and add TWO only into the blender with the juice and add the 2 cloves. Blend well and then add the cilantro bunch(with the stems chopped off) and pulse until chopped like you like. Add the blender mixture to the tomatoes. Salt to taste. Taste the salsa and chop up the third pepper if it's too mild. If it's too hot, than you can add fresh tomatoes to cut the heat.

Self Portrait Challenge - Perseverance

It has been raining just about every day here in north Texas, for at least a month now. Not all day, but at some point during almost every day. It is so unusual, and has caused lots of flooding, as well as messed up lots of plans!

We had planned to go peach picking today with our girls. We decided that despite the grey clouds overhead, we were going to follow through with our plans anyway, rain or shine, since we've been cooped up too much lately. We sure are glad we did, because it was beautiful, even though we got wet and muddy. Heck, that may have been the best part :)

And so my Self Portrait Challenge photo for the week, to follow this month's theme of "Water - Air - Earth - Fire" is definitely earthy AND watery...

Now, here's Nicole, who jumped right in & didn't let the mud stop her:

And here's the picturesque scene across the overflowing pond that is on the orchard property:
